Mimecast named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Digital Communications Governance and Archiving Solutions
Mimecast’s recognition comes at a pivotal moment as AI reshapes the future of governance.
Key Points
- Mimecast has been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Digital Communications Governance and Archiving Solutions, evaluated on completeness of vision and ability to execute.1
- Traditional governance was built one function at a time, and risk and data don’t stay in those lanes. Mimecast has focused on helping to close that gap with our Mimecast Apex™ Data Governance offering.
- There’s a bigger story worth paying attention to: with the introduction of AI, the center of gravity within organizations is shifting and business-critical functions are converging. Governance programs can no longer be designed solely from the perspective of a single function, and any governance technology solution will need to account for this shift.
We’re excited to share that Mimecast has once again been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Communications Governance and Archiving Solutions (DCGA). We’re proud of this achievement, especially at what we believe is one of the most important moments our market has experienced in years. Governance is redefining itself, business-critical functions are converging, and this evolution is nowhere near finished.
Governance now has a bigger job
AI is reshaping how businesses work faster than existing governance can keep up. Governance responsibilities are expanding well beyond the functions they were built for. And one of the biggest consequences has nothing to do with technology at all. It’s the growing number of business functions that need access to the same information, often at the same time, but for very different reasons.
Security. Legal. Compliance. Privacy. HR. Employee Relations. IT. Each brings its own responsibilities, priorities, and perspective. And when these priorities compete, whose take precedence over all others? Who makes that decision, and how?
These aren’t new challenges, but AI is making them harder to ignore. The questions increasingly cross traditional organizational boundaries, while the responsibility for answering them often remains within the individual functions. These are the challenges shaping how we think about governance at Mimecast, and where we believe the market needs to go next.
Complexity makes the fundamentals of governance even more important
When you strip away the terminology, technologies, and individual business functions, three foundational questions remain.
• Can we quickly find the information we need when it matters?
• Do we clearly understand where information came from, what it means, and how it was created and used?
• Can we explain and defend the decisions and actions taken based on the information collected?
Answering these questions has always been challenging. With the introduction of collaboration platforms, AI systems, and shared enterprise business systems, information is becoming increasingly interconnected across organizations and functions. The ability to quickly locate relevant information, preserve its context, and respond confidently to legal, compliance, and regulatory demands is becoming more important than ever.
And the solution can’t simply be to create new disciplines or siloed teams, introduce more policies, add more systems or processes, move more data, or create more copies to satisfy each new requirement or request. Business leaders need a reliable, consistent understanding of how data and information flows through their organization, regardless of where it resides or which function needs access to it.
We need to think differently about how governance and technology support the business as a whole.
The next chapter
For years, the digital communications governance and archiving market has focused on capturing, preserving, and managing information across an expanding number of complex communication channels and systems. Those capabilities remain essential because business needs and legal and regulatory obligations aren’t going away. Quite the opposite, actually.
The business environment is becoming increasingly complex. Data volumes continue to grow at an extraordinary pace, creating additional organizational risks, some of which remain hidden. At the same time, information is spread across more systems, shared by more business functions, and used in more ways than ever before. Understanding the context and relationships across organizations is becoming increasingly important.
These changes are challenging business leaders to rethink not only how they manage and govern business-critical information across their organizations, but also how their people, processes, and technology work together to support the business as a whole.
This evolving landscape presents new opportunities and is helping shape the direction of our Mimecast Apex™ Data Governance offering. We believe the future isn’t simply about capturing and managing more information. It’s about rethinking how governance and technology work together to better support our customers and their evolving needs.
We’re proud to be recognized once again as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Communications Governance and Archiving Solutions. And we’re equally excited about what comes next for our industry. The organizations best positioned for the future won’t simply be those who respond fastest to new governance challenges. They will be the ones whose governance programs and solutions are already evolving alongside the rapidly changing business environment they support.
That’s the future we are building toward at Mimecast.
