Email Data Recovery from Mimecast: Solving an Industry Disconnect

According to new data from Vanson Bourne, commissioned by Mimecast, nearly 80 percent of respondents said the ability to back up and recover email data is “very important.” However, only half stated that they could recover “all of their data” in the event of email corruption, cyberattacks, malicious or accidental deletion.

This is a problem.

A significant disconnect

So why the disconnect? For starters, an on-premises email data protection solution can be a bear to maintain. On-premise archiving solutions tend to pose the same challenges – software upgrade costs, server refresh costs, and painful storage expansions.

In addition, data protection challenges don’t evaporate when organizations migrate email to the cloud. Whether on-prem or cloud-based, email data faces exposure to accidental deletion, technical failure, malware, and insiders hell-bent on revenge. What’s worse, the leading cloud email provider, Microsoft Office 365, offers no backup capability to enable IT admins to restore Exchange Online data in the event of unintended loss or corruption.

Three options, each flawed

For years, organizations looking to protect their Office 365 email data had to choose between deploying a cloud backup solution, backing up to an on-prem infrastructure, or doing nothing.

Unfortunately, backing up cloud data in the data center risks bottlenecking performance and saddles IT teams with managing backup hardware and software, essentially canceling the very advantages of migrating to the cloud. Managing a cloud solution might be better, though it often involves administering a one-trick pony solution, not to mention managing a one-solution vendor.

Yet based on the findings above, a majority of organizations may well have opted to do nothing at all! This despite the full realization of the risks this non-decision brings...

Introducing Sync & Recover

Fortunately, we’ve been working with our customers to bring a new approach to Office 365 data protection. We call it Sync & Recover.

Mimecast Sync & Recover for Exchange and Office 365 gives our customers a fast, intuitive, point-and-click interface for recovering Exchange Server or Exchange Online email data in the event of unwanted loss or corruption. Not only that; we’ve also added sync and recover protection for Outlook personal folders, calendars, and contact lists. Better still, for customers running email on Office 365, Sync & Recover requires no hardware or software. That’s because we leverage Mimecast archiving APIs to integrate with Exchange Online.

We’re eager to take our customers to the next level of cyber resilience with Sync & Recover. This new add-on feature bundle brings new value to archive data by empowering organizations to boost uptime, extend business continuity, and push corporate productivity to new heights.

We invite you to learn more about Mimecast Sync & Recover for Exchange and Office 365.
