Encrypting email helps protect sensitive data.
Encrypting email is essential for protecting sensitive information such as financial records, customer data and intellectual property. Employees frequently need to share sensitive materials with colleagues and partners, and sending encrypted email helps ensure that valuable assets are kept safe from inadvertent or intentional data leaks.
Traditionally, encrypting email has involved solutions such as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) or enforced server-to-server Transport Layer Security (TLS). But these technologies tend to add extra administrative burden to IT teams already short on resources, and some encrypted email services require recipients to download software in order to receive encrypted messages.
Mimecast provides an easier alternative for encrypting email with Mimecast Secure Messaging. This email encryption service provides a user-friendly channel for sending and receiving protected messages, and enables administrators to set policies for automatically encrypting email when required.
Secure Messaging is part of Mimecast's all-in-one subscription service for email security, continuity and archiving. With Mimecast, a secure encrypted email never leaves the Mimecast cloud, helping to better protect sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.
Mimecast makes encrypting email easy — to send a protected message, users simply need to click a Send Secure option before clicking Send. By simplifying the encryption process so dramatically, Mimecast enables fast and thorough adoption of technology for encrypting email and helps to stop the use of unapproved applications for secure messaging.
When encrypting email, users create a new message in Outlook and then click on the Mimecast tab within Mimecast for Outlook and select Send Secure. Secure messages can also be sent via Mimecast for Mac or by using the Secure Messaging web portal. After the user clicks Send, the message content and attachments are securely uploaded to the Mimecast cloud, scanned for viruses, checked against content control policies, and stored in a secure AES encrypted archive. Recipients then receive a message with instructions for logging into the secure messaging portal, where they can read and reply to messages, compose a new message and download any attachments.
