A City lawyer, Christopher was a Partner for twenty years in Slaughter and May, primarily advising clients in the financial services sector. He served on the Partnership Board for nine years as Executive Partner (Finance) and as Head of Banking.
From 2000, Christopher was Group General Counsel on the Board of NatWest. For three years from 2001, he was the first Chairman of the independent committee at the Financial Services Authority, which had the exclusive responsibility for exercising all the FSA’s powers to impose disciplinary sanctions. During the same period, he was also a Non-Executive Director of The Intercare Group, a FTSE-listed pharmaceutical company, serving as Senior Independent Director and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee.
Christopher is a Non-Executive Director of Mimecast. Recently he has also held roles as Non-Executive Director of City Merchants High Yield Trust, a FTSE-listed investment company as a member of the Financial Reporting Council’s Review Panel and as Chairman of The Macfarlane Trust.
