It is amazing how fast it feels as if 2018 has flown past us.

Despite the fact that every year is the same number of months, weeks, days and hours, it feels as if somehow 2018 disappeared in a wink. This is due in large part to the amazing this that we accomplished first as Solebit and now as Mimecast. There is no shortage of people to thank or items to be thankful for, but I would like to highlight a few accomplishments to help put 2018 in perspective.

Significant Accomplishments

At the beginning of 2018 we were proud to announce “Solebit Secures $11 Million in Series A Funding Led by ClearSky Security” and then the press started rolling in, including being recognized by CSO Magazine when they reported on the “Best security software: How 18 cutting-edge tools tackle today’s threats” specifically naming Solebit as the leader in the category of endpoint security/sandboxing. We were also recognized by the Globee Awards which is an international business awards program that awarded Gold To Solebit as Startup of the Year in the US, as well as with Silver from IT World’s Network Product Guide.

Scary Findings

Back in May 2018 Solebit’s Threat Research Team uncovered unique attacks leveraging new exploit variations of Microsoft Equation vulnerability, which circumvents many security solutions and vendors attempting to protect your valuable data from infestation.

We were of the first to identify these new vulnerabilities publicly when we published a couple of blogs titled “Equation Exploit Menace – Detection Evasion” and another titled “The Equation Strikes Back – DIFAT overflow” which gave deep technical insight into the potential harm this vulnerability can  manifest and exactly how that could impact your environment.

By identifying the nuances of the trojans involved we were also able to show how static analysis prevents these types of attacks and thus protect your content when other solutions may have failed.

An Amazing Combination

At the end of July, the headlines read “MIMECAST ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF SOLEBIT.” This acquisition brought to the Mimecast family enhanced protection against advanced cyberattacks, zero-day threats and malware while Mimecast reach and resources helps extend the reach our SoleGATE solution to significantly wider and deeper reaches.

Being part of the Mimecast family has proven to be an amazing adventure and clearly a wining combination. Although I’m sad to see the Solebit name pass into history, I look forward to building on our 2018 success, and as a proud Mimecast team leader, helping more organizations truly prevent cyberattacks (even zero day) in order to protect valuable information assets and contribute to make the world a cyber safer place.
