Businesses continue moving their productivity platforms to Microsoft Office 365™ in droves. As of their April 2018 earnings announcement, Microsoft said over 135 million business users worldwide are now on Office 365.
While the move to the cloud represents potential savings for both operational and maintenance costs, there are definite risks involved. Gaps in the Exchange Online email platform around email security, archiving and continuity may need to be filled with third-party solutions and choosing the right one for your business is critical.
Mimecast’s Office 365 MVP J. Peter Bruzzese recently sat down with TechTarget’s Mike Perkowski to talk all things Office 365 migration. J. Peter was asked how organizations to should plan to address the email gaps in Office 365 when making the move and what follows is a transcript of his answer.
J. Peter Bruzzese: Years ago, when I decided to move toward Office 365 and be a proponent of it, I said: “What do I look for to fill these gaps?” And here was an interesting dilemma: with on-premises you can actually fill the gaps with different vendors because it’s all on-premises. So, you can choose best-of-class, best-of-breed, Gartner Magic Quadrants, your personal favorites—you can have five different vendors for the five different gaps.
But with the cloud, you can’t do that. You don’t want to daisy-chain multiple solutions onto the front-end of Office 365. So, what do you do? You need an all-in-one solution.
The problem is, a lot of these solutions didn’t design and develop for an all-in-one situation. They looked at it and said, “I’m going to focus on security, or archiving, or monitoring.”
Alright, great. But now, when folks need an all-in-one, those companies are kind of at a loss. In some cases, they are kind of Frankenstein-ing their solutions with others to make an all-in-one. So my recommendation for folks is to look for an all-in-one solution that can handle your security, archiving and availability—all these different needs you have.
