Email DLP is part of a holistic approach to email management.
Email data leak prevention (email DLP) is a critical concern for businesses today. Without effective email DLP solutions, businesses can suffer significant damage to viability and reputation when trade secrets, private customer data, sensitive negotiations, and other proprietary information is leaked or exposed. While leaks can be malicious, they are most often inadvertent-the result of employees lacking knowledge about specific email DLP policies.
An email DLP solution can help protect the organization by blocking transmission of outgoing emails that contain sensitive or unauthorized data. But selecting the right DLP solution is critical-many solutions are difficult to manage, uneconomical in execution, or limited in their effectiveness by an inability to protect information across multiple systems.
Mimecast provides an email DLP solution as part of a holistic email management solution that delivers greater protection against leaks while minimizing administrative burden and cost.

Mimecast - SaaS-based email DLP technology
Mimecast provides a unified email management system on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model that includes superior tools for managing DLP. Mimecast's platform includes "smart perimeter" technology designed to provide organizations with gateway and security controls that match those found in on-premise policy control solutions. Using a SaaS delivery model, Mimecast can provide a level of functionality that is equal to or better than that offered by existing security solutions. Mimecast's Smart Perimeter module enables companies to deploy extensive security and policy control to outbound email (as well as inbound) and allows for the establishment of robust email DLP policies. The tools provided by Mimecast include:
- Regular Expression Testing. Mimecast supports the use of regular expression (regex) search strings that can detect variable data such as credit card and Social Security numbers-information not normally present or permitted in email messages. Mimecast regex testing tools support the detection of any variable for which a regex query string can be written and will detect keywords or phrases in all parts of the message, including attachments.
- MDS Hash Detection. This tool provides additional protection of attachments by allowing administrators to upload documents into Mimecast, generate an MDS hash, and use the hash to create a control policy limiting the transmission of such documents by email.
Mimecast delivers DLP, archiving, email continuity, and security
In addition to email DLP, Mimecast provides a comprehensive set of tools for unified email management, including:
- Email archive services. Mimecast's email archiving solutions can automatically store all incoming, outgoing, and internal email in a secure offsite archive that can be searched quickly and easily.
- Email continuity. During a planned or unplanned outage, Mimecast enables users to gain access both to new incoming email as well as historical email data while exchange server recovery is taking place.
- Email spam filtering service. Mimecast's unique spam filter stops 99.5 percent of spam from entering the system.
- Email security. Mimecast's anti-virus technology supports an email security policy by providing a highly effective tool for stopping email-borne threats.
