Chief Executive Officer
The driving force and public face of the business, Peter founded Mimecast in 2003 with CTO, Neil Murray.
With the support of angel investors, loyal customers and a strong management team, Peter has overseen more than a decade continual growth. He relocated to Boston in August 2011 to help drive the expansion of Mimecast's US business, and was instrumental in securing $62M of Series C funding from global private equity firm, Insight Venture Partners in September 2012.
Peter’s career began in South Africa, where, after studying marketing and founding a successful distribution company, he trained as a Microsoft systems engineer and began working with corporate messaging systems. He founded his first technology company, FAB Technology, in the mid-nineties.
A leading integrator of new internet and messaging technologies, the business grew rapidly and was acquired in 1998 by Idion, a JSE-listed technology business. Peter became Idion Managing Director, a role he stayed in until, observing trends in internet business services, he decided to move to the UK.
Chief Technology Officer
Neil is one of the people who helped build Mimecast. Not just metaphorically, but literally. He’s led the development team from our inception – when he was the development team – overseeing the construction of our platform from the ground up. It’s thanks to him that Mimecast, uniquely, was conceived and built as a single, integrated platform rather than a set of bolted-together services.
Today he oversees the architecture of the service platform and sets out the overall technical vision and strategy for the service.
Before Mimecast, Neil was the CTO of South African, JSE-listed, Global Technology Services, a provider of business information solutions, which had bought Pro-Solutions, a software development company he helped found in the early 90s.
Neil’s 20 year-career also includes experience architecting and building leading software products for internet banking, messaging and rapid application development.
Chief of Group Operations
Keith is responsible for Group Operations, covering all aspects of Mimecast that involve how systems and technologies drive our growth and constantly evolving efficiencies and scalability. Keith has assumed a number of roles in Mimecast spanning most of the business from Marketing to Customer Experience to Technical Operations: with this broad and deep knowledge of the business he is perfectly placed to be the catalyst for business wide operating efficiency and agility.
This role is perfectly suited to his background in business strategy and management. Keith joined Mimecast in 2008 after having spent seven years driving disruptive business models in the telecommunications sector in both incumbent telcos and start ups.
Over the ten years previous to joining Mimecast Keith has worked across banking, media and telecoms. Consulting on consumer adoption of new technologies – like IP telephony and mobile money transfers – and developing business, marketing and media strategies.
Chief Strategy Officer
Matthew joined Mimecast in June 2010 as our Communications Director and was promoted to Chief Strategy Officer in May this year. He looks after the global marketing function and uses his communications skills, which include being a published novelist, to bring the Mimecast story to life for all our stakeholder audiences, internal and external.
Before joining Mimecast, Matthew ran his own consultancy business acting as a Communications Director for a number of tech companies, and helping executives build their ‘personal brands’. Previously, he spent more than 20 years in various positions within the Next Fifteen group of PR agencies, including the founding of Bite Communications in 1995 and the setting up of Text 100’s Asia Pacific business while based in Sydney.
Matthew studied linguistics at Reading University and spends whatever free time he can carve out either playing the piano in a blues band, or practicing martial arts.
Chief Financial Officer
Peter joined Mimecast in 2006 and is responsible for overseeing the Company’s global financial strategy and operations. He has helped steer Mimecast through seven consecutive years of double digit growth. He was key to securing the $21m investment from Index Ventures and Dawn Capital in December 2009 and in securing $62m of Series C funding from Insight Venture Partners in September 2012.
Peter has 15 years of experience in the IT sector. Prior to joining he was CFO of SR Telecom, a Nasdaq listed company with operations in 26 countries, based in Montreal, Canada. He was key to SR Telecom’s achieving an SEC listing and helped shepherd successful acquisitions including the $121M takeover of Netro Corporation. Peter has also lectured in accountancy at Concordia University and began his career at Ernst & Young in their technology group.
Peter holds a Chartered Accountant Designation with the Canadian Order of Chartered Accountants and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Chief of Customer Operations
Mark is responsible for global customer operations at Mimecast. Mark joined Mimecast in 2005 as the company's third employee. After helping to put Mimecast on the map in the UK market, Mark moved to the US in 2008 to assist the launch of Mimecast North America. In October 2011, he was promoted to General Manager, Mimecast North America, a business that now has more than 4,100+ customers, over 1.5 million users and 200+ staff. More recently Mark has taken full responsibility for driving a great customer experience pre and post sales through world class customer advocacy, professional services, service delivery, technical consultancy and sales engineering.
Prior to joining Mimecast, Mark completed a Ph.D. in African History at St John's College, Cambridge, following a brief spell at McKinsey & Co in London. Outside work Mark enjoys cooking, writing, fishing and spending time outdoors in beautiful New England with his family.
GM EMEA & APAC
Alan joined Mimecast in 2008 as Sales Director, before taking on the role of General Manager for the UK, Europe and Middle East. Since then he has played a vital role in shaping and overseeing the go to market and customer experience strategies that have underpinned our rapid growth, and now brings the same insight and experience to his role as GM EMEA & APAC.
Today, Alan is responsible for driving business and revenue performance across our rapidly expanding global organisation. In particular, his focus is on enabling greater cohesion between our regional teams and, therefore, more effective global execution of our go to market and customer experience strategies.
Alan started his career with Vistorm, a top security VAR in the UK, before moving on to SurfControl. There he held channel and sales roles before being promoted to UK Channel Sales Director.
Managing Director, Mimecast South Africa
In his new role as Managing Director for Mimecast South Africa, Brandon brings with him over 15 years’ experience in sales, sales training and certification, as well as various programs aimed at building new revenue streams.
Brandon has been with Mimecast since January 2008 where he previously held the position of Sales Director. During this time, Brandon was instrumental in securing some of Mimecast South Africa’s key clients, growing the business from 85 to over 2,000 customers to date.
Prior to Mimecast, Brandon spent 10 years within the Dimension Data Group, starting off in Sales moving into an Exco position at Internet Solutions. Thereafter, he ran Sales for the Dimension Data Group for the Western Cape. During this time he won numerous awards, including Sales Person of the Year for four years. He was also conferred the coveted IS Leadership Award in 2005.
General Manager, Product
Grant joined Mimecast in 2008 as Business Development Director in South Africa, leading the development of the channel sales model in that region. He relocated to London in June 2012 to help build the global product management team.
Grant has overall responsibility for the development, commercialization and launch of new features and products that will delight Mimecast customers and users.
Grant started his career in IT early – undertaking the development of software applications while obtaining a finance and business degree. Prior to joining Mimecast, Grant built an IT professional services firm specializing in helping customers work more productively with unstructured data. He sold that business successfully to a listed entity in South Africa.
Nathaniel Borenstein has been Mimecast's Chief Scientist since 2010. His duties focus on the future, including the evolution of Mimecast's long term vision and the development of our intellectual property strategy and assets.
He is best known as the co-creator of the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) standard and the developer of several widely-used software systems, including the Andrew Message System and metamail. Before joining Mimecast, he was an IBM Distinguished Engineer. Previously he had served as a faculty member at the University of Michigan, Carnegie-Mellon University, and Grinnell College. He holds three patents related to Internet payment systems, with other applications pending, and has consulted in numerous cases related to email and Internet payments.
He is also a serial entrepeneur. In 1994 he was one of the founders of First Virtual Holdings, recognized by the Smithsonian as the first Internet payment system. He grew First Virtual to a 1996 IPO and 1998 acquisition. In 2000 he co-founded NetPOS.com, the first Internet-centric point of sale system. He is the author of three books and numerous technical articles, a past President and Board Member of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, and a former Board Member of the Institute for Global Communications and of Peace Action.
General Manager, Mimecast North America
Bekim joined Mimecast in June 2014 to run the North American operation.
He comes to Mimecast with 20 years of experience scaling both private and public technology companies. Bekim has held senior leadership positions at NetIQ, BladeLogic, Blue Coat Systems, Logitech and most recently served as the President and CEO of Cymtec Systems. During his tenure at Blue Coat, the company experienced a period of unprecedented growth, as it went from roughly $100M in annual revenue to over $400M annually in under four years.
Bekim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in Houston, Texas.
