Basic Energy Services, the nation’s third largest well servicing contractor, provides well site services essential to maintaining production from the oil and gas wells within its operating area. The company has employees throughout the major oil and gas producing regions in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Kansas and the Rocky Mountain States. Basic Energy Services, Inc. selected Mimecast to streamline its email management, boost performance and better prepare for investigative requests.

Challenge

In Midland, TX where Basic Energy Services is headquartered, conditions can be unpredictable. After a burst pipe threatened to shut down the corporate headquarters (and impact the company’s primary data center) just days before a major US holiday , Lars Crotwell, Vice President of I.T. at Basic Energy Services knew an email continuity solution was a high priority: “With so many employees at remote locations, email is a fundamental tool for our organization. Should the data center have suffered an operational loss, so too would our business. We knew an email continuity solution was required, and when we found Mimecast we knew we had found the perfect business partner for our needs.”

Prior to implementing Mimecast’s Unified Email Management (UEM)
solution, Basic Energy Services was using separate anti-spam and antivirus solutions for their Microsoft Exchange 2003 messaging environment.

The company also had no formal archiving system and relied on native
data store and time-consuming offsite replication for backups. Due to
ever increasing data volumes and heightened activity within the energy
industry as a whole, Basic Energy Services was looking to implement a
solution to help the company better archive and store information as well
as handle the company’s research & investigation needs.

Solution

Implementing Mimecast’s UEM solution streamlined Basic Energy Services’ email management operations with security, continuity, policy control, archiving capabilities and search all built in. Mimecast also integrated seamlessly with Basic Energy’s Outlook email client environment while maintaining the look and feel of the user interface. In addition, the company is now much better prepared to fulfill a wide range of search and legal hold requests complete with deletion override and automatic backup and recovery, as well as improving routine break/fix operations.
